Operatorless Istio is now generally available📜

Users are strongly encouraged to begin their Istio migration away from operator to helm with this release. Istio operator will not be available in Big Bang 3.0.

A 2.53.1 patch release with fixes for know issues discovered during the Operatorless beta is forthcoming:

Label selector/naming issue with ingress/virtual services - ISSUE
Gatekeeper bug with istio operatorless - ISSUE
Multiple certificates for the gateways - ISSUE
jwks issue with istiod - ISSUE

Version 2.54, releasing on May 30, 2025, will be the last update in the 2.x series and will reach end-of-life (EOL) upon the release of Big Bang 3.0

Upgrade Notices📜

BigBang - MR:
Important Alloy Notice: Alloy has been moved out of the Big Bang “addons” section of the Values.yaml in preparation for Alloy to replace Promtail as the core log collector. Users will need to update any custom values.yaml references to .addons.alloy and migrate to them to .alloy
Gitlab - MR:
This chart now makes use of a bitnami postgres subchart that pulls in postgres version 16. Previously version 14 was used. They are not compatible with one another. If you are not going by recommended route of using an external database for Gitlab, you will need to manually migrate your data from Postgres 14 to 16 before/during the upgrade. Otherwise, you will ruin into the following error: >waiting for server to start....20250508 22:26:50.914 GMT [93] FATAL: database files are incompatible with server │ │ 20250508 22:26:50.914 GMT [93] DETAIL: The data directory was initialized by PostgreSQL version 14, which is not compatible with this version 16.3. │ │ pg_ctl: could not start server
BigBang - MR:
Headlamp project is now available for testing in the Big Bang product. Users are encouraged to try this package while it remains in beta status for the next few upcoming releases.
Kiali - MR:
All package specific values will now need to be shifted under the upstream key. Example:

Please note this does not apply to Big Bang specific top level keys including domain, sso, istio, networkPolicies, bbtests, and waitJob. - Elasticsearch-kibana - MR: - elasticsearchKibana Major Upgrade Notice: Elasticsearch and Kibana images have been updated from 8.x to 9.x. Please review Elasticsearch’s documentation for breaking changes that may affect custom configurations https://www.elastic.co/docs/release-notes. - External Secrets - MR - Several of the External Secrets Operator CRDs have updated from v1beta to v1 which may not automatically update with the rest of the chart. If the operator pods show errors, confirm that the crd versions have updated, or force an update by deleting them and reconciling the chart with flux.
